This is an example character: Lon, one of the cowboys that work for Bronson.

1) Building Points: 75 BP.

2) Ability scores: roll 3d6 for Strength. Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Looks and Charisma, then 1d100 for each for the fractional ability.

Intelligence is high but it is good for Accuracy. The rest are quite bad, but I will leave them as they are. There are options to adjust any ability at this stage by spending BP or increasing one ability by 1, and decreasing another one by 2.

3) Background: Nationality (67=USA South, 84=Urban). I´ll skip the part about the family, and move to Age (14+1D12). Very young, 17. I think I´ll reroll this one, cost 1 BP. 25 years.

Handedness (1d100): Right.

Height (1d100): 66 inches, that´s about 167cm. Weight (1d20): 135 lbs (62,5 kg). There are two methods to do this, I used the simpler one.

Family&Social Class: N/A. Starting Money (1d100): I rolled 61, so 30$.

Just for fun, I will roll a reason to go West: Freedom from Strict Family Structure

QUIRKS & FLAWS: if the Quirk is random, you get more extra BPs. If I select it (cherrypicking), I only get half. And for second and additional, it is half minus 5.

As this character does not have a specific background, I´ll take my chances with the random roll. If something very awkward happens, I can always use my BP to reroll.

First roll: 31 (Habitual Quirks) => 41 Late Sleeper (I gain 15BP). Now I could reroll it by using 5 BP, but it does not sound too bad.

Second roll: 94 (Common Flaws) => 82 Nearsighted (I gain 25BP). Oops, this would make him a very poor marksman. I think I will reroll this one spending 5 BP. Sleepwalker. OK, makes sense sort of. And I get 20 BP

Total BP at this stage: 99 BP

Now to the skills

SKILLS: learned knowledge. The full Skill List is in the Tutorial section. "Universal" are those skills that most people have had some exposure to during their life. If a skill is not Universal, you cannot even try to do it without having the skill. Some skills have prerequisites.

I get some bonus BP for skills from Charisma/Intelligence/Wisdom.

Interesting skills: Agriculture, Animal Herding, Animal Lore, Appraisal, Boating, Climbing, Gambling, Hunting, Observation, Riding, Rope Use, Swimming

For each selected Skill, a Skill Mastery roll has to be made, and the result plus the relevant ability score deducted from 100. For example, Agriculture would be 1d8 (rolled 8) and Ability is Wisdom (15), for a total of 77% (Novice).

The same skill can be selected twice, but the second selection costs twice as many BP.

Animal Herding: cost 1 BP, rolled 1 for the Mastery (+Wisdom 15) for 84% mastery. I will buy it again (2 BP)... rolled 2, +15 Wisdom = 17, which is subtracted from 84% to make it 67% (Average).

More skills: Animal Lore (1 BP, INT, 1d10), Appraisal (1BP, INT/WIS, 1d8), Boating (2BP, WIS, 1d8) , Climbing (2BP, STR/DEX, 1d8), Gambling (7BP, WIS/CHA, 1d6), Hunting (5BP, DEX/WIS, 1d6), Observation (6BP, WIS, 1d8), Riding (3BP, DEX/WIS, 1d8), Rope Use (2BP, DEX, 1d8), Swimming (1BP, STR/CON, 1d12).

With the above, I still have 77 BP left. But many skills have very low Mastery level, so I might revisit the Skills section later.

Before Gear, I need to double check everything... I forgot to roll 1d4 for Hit Points = 3, for a total of 22 HP.

Also, the Universal Skills have a mastery for 100%-Ability bonus. So any skill I selected that was an Universal one, I need to deduct the ability bonus before deducting the result of the die roll (and the ability bonus again). This improves the following skills (if two Abilities are included for the same skill, the one with the lesser value is always used):

Agriculture............WIS....15
Animal Husbandry...WIS.....15
Boating................WIS......15
climbing...............STR/DEX..8
Hunting..............DEX/WIS...8
Observation.........WIS.......15
Riding...............DEX/WIS....8
Rope Use............DEX.........8

Also I did take into consideration the modified BP cost for Skills, depending on the bonus from Abilities.

As to the weapons, Winchester Rifle .32 caliber for 25,95 $ and a Colt Patterson with 9" long barrel for 21$, the starting money could be a problem...

OK, we can start with the character sheet. You should have a look at the Tutorials scene to get an overview of the system. The mechanics are quite simple. and in any case I will guide you through the character generation step by step.

First, it might be a good idea for you get this very handy Excel version of the character sheet:

And then roll the Ability scores: roll 3d6 for Strength. Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Looks and Charisma, and then 1d100 for each for the fractional ability.

Ability scores rolled OK. Intelligence is high, which is good. Constitution also, even though not sure if these are the most important abilities for your character (see the Tutorial for a bit more info and the skill list). For instance, Gambling skill is modified by Wisdom and Charisma which are a bit low at present.

Options to modify the Ability scores:

1) Generate Ability Points: you can sacrifice points from one ability score to increase another (except Looks). Depending on the current value of the Ability, the cost for the trade up is different:
7 or less => 1 for 1 (so if you wish to increase WIS to 8, you can deduct 1 point from any Ability except Looks)
8-10 => 2 for 1
11-13 => 3 for 1
14-16 => 4 for 1
17-20 => 5 for 1
21+ => 10 for 1

This option does not spend BP which is good. For instance, you could sacrifice Constitution to increase Wisdom etc.

2) Generate Building Points => BP are used to purchase skills and talents later on. You can sacrifice Ability scores to get additional BP.

3) Spend Staring Building Points => you can raise the fractional ability. The cost is one BP per five fractional ability points (note that the fractional ability is simply to measure how close you are to gaining an extra point in your Ability). So for instance Intelligence and Wisdom you could increase by spending 6 BP (+30% which would take them above 100%, and thus adding +1 to the current score).

As you can see on the "STATS" sheet, you have 75 Building Points (BP). You can also play with the different options and costs there.

OK, so I could use one point of CON to increase WIS to 8, and then discount another four CON points to finally raise WIS to 10, right? And then discounting a STR point I could assing it to CHA.

The results would be

STR 8, INT 15, WIS 10, DEX 10, CON 10, LKS 11, CHA 8.

What do you think? It's my first time with the system and I'm not sure if it's a good choice.

Cargando editor
15/06/2014, 18:33

Yes that is correct. STR 8, INT 15, WIS 10, DEX 10, CON 10, LKS 11, CHA 8 looks OK, an ability score of 10 or 11 does not have any negative modifiers. I think it is also a good idea to save BP for other things.

Next step: background. To speed things up, I can do the rolls when there is no options to choose from. You were born in one of the Northeast states, in a rural area. For instance, Maryland. Both parents are still alive. They were loving parents, and you had six siblings (you are the youngest), however all except one died due to different diseases. And the sister who did survive is actually a bitter enemy of yours.

You are 25 years old, and right handed. Your father is a retired military officer (upper middle class). Starting money 41$.

That was easy. Next the quirks, talents and flaws. There is a list in the Tutorial, please have a look and think which might interest you.

If you wish to write a bit of background in the meantime, Crowe is best friends with Jason Bronson, they are of the same age. Hmm, I think we have run too fast with the character sheet :) Talents and Flaws it´s OK if you do not want to put any, I was concerned maybe the macros did not work on the spreadsheet (the previous version sometimes had this issue). Also this character Crowe I always imagined he had some sort of a natural talent for shooting that would make him pursue the career of a gunslinger. But that is up to you.

Regarding the character sheet, the Ability scores do not match what you rolled. I think you swapped the results around, and also as they are not identified and the first one is hidden I am somewhat confused. You cannot assign the results freely to any Ability, they follow the order of the rolls, but then you can increase one ability by decreasing another.

As the results are nothing extraordinary either, I think it is best you repeat the rolls for the abilities. On each 3d6 roll, please put what it is for: Strength. Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Looks and Charisma. And then the same for the fractional amounts (1d100).

Shooting: Accuracy and Speed are the two things that affect your shooting ability. Accuracy is modified by your Intelligence and Dexterity, and Speed by your Dexterity and Wisdom.

Yes, I think the random background stuff fits the character nicely. Need to include the sister who is the only sibling alive and at the same time your bitter enemy :)

Talents: Quick Thinking => you arrive at conclusions and understanding more effectively than most. This gives you +1 bonus on all Intelligence and Wisdom checks, though it does not affect the actual Ability score.

Perceive Tendency => gives you a -1 bonus to Initiative rolls in a showdown or duel.

Both seem fine. I did not include a full list of Quirks&Flaws in the Tutorial, basically the flaws give you more BP to spend on skills and can be either random or chosen.

Now to the skills... The BP cost on the skill list is the base cost, which is modified by certain ability scores (Wisdom, Intelligence and Charisma). This is actually quite complex, as there are also BP bonuses from Abilities and so forth, but the Excel spreadsheet does the work nicely. I have put the skills you listed, and the cost is a lot less (because you have high Intelligence).

Administration (3 BP spent) 80%, further dev. cost => 8 BP

Cooking (1 BP) 70%, further dev. cost => 2 BP

Deception (2 BP) 83%, further dev. cost => 6 BP

Disguise (2 BP) 78%, further dev. cost => 6 BP

Distraction (3BP) 80%, further dev. cost => 4 BP

Fast Talking (3 BP) 77%, further dev. cost => 4 BP

Gambling (9BP) 81%, further dev. cost => 16 BP

Gaming (2BP) 47%, further dev. cost => 5 BP (this only applies to games where luck is not a factor, eg. chess)

Listening (5BP) 76%, further dev. cost => 10 BP

Reading Lips (3BP) 68%, further dev. cost => 10 BP

Riding (3BP) 73%, further dev. cost => 6 BP

Searching (5BP) 72%, further dev. cost => 10 BP

With the above skill levels, you still have 37BP left to spend for additional skills. Also you can improve any skill further. This is how the percentage translates to mastery:

100% Unskilled (only universal skills can be used at this level)
99-75% Novice
74-50% Average
49-25% Advanced
24-13% Expert
12-0% Master

So anything above 75% is not remarkable. I included the cost for further development of each skill you have purchased so far.

Notas de juego

I have included the list of Quirks&Flaws in case you want to have a look if there is something that could fit the background, or they can be rolled randomly. But they are not necessary.

Hit points: I already rolled 4 previously :)
