January 1st,

The New Year is here.

I am hung over.

I think we all are.

A huge blizzard has been roaring outside since Christmas. Not having much to do definitely helped everyone get into party mode last night.

January 5th,

Things are getting a little crazy around here.

Two days ago, a supply run went missing in the blizzard. They haven’t returned yet. Two rescue teams have set out searching for them. They just came back… with casualties. Johansen was bitten… Iean had to finish the job before she transformed and spread the infection. They were a couple… Poor both… Can’t help thinking it could have been Olivia and me…

The other team, Christian and Edward brought dire news. It seems the number of zombies around town has been increasing steadily during the last weeks. They were using the word ‘horde’ to describe what they saw.

I think that could well explain what happened to the three guys in the supply run…

January 12th,

Thinning the horde has become a routine task.

It seems these fuckers never stop coming, so the last week has been a constant military exercise: kill nearby zombies; secure the perimeter; hit and run for supplies nearby; barricade the colony. Twice a day.

Things are getting tough and… worst of all, not everyone seems to fit for the task.

January 20th,

Two more supply runs were lost in the last week.

The situation is starting to be critical.

While our numbers diminish, we are now well below twenty survivors in the colony, the fucking zombies seem to have no end in their ranks.

To make things worse, now it seems we live in an eternal winter.

February 1st,

Things have stabilized a little bit in the last few days. Though we are running low in supplies, the number of zombies outside hasn’t increased in the last week. That might give us some hope that we can make it through the winter and hold our ground here at the colony.

During our last leadership meeting there were already talks about leaving this place seeking better shelter.

So let’s hope the situation keeps getting better so we don’t have to risk a run for it…

February 10th,

Fuck, fuck, FUCK!

She couldn’t have stayed quiet, could she?

Things were going fine, we had started rationing supplies, but they could have lasted until spring, we could have make it, but no. She had to be careless.

Stupid Samantha.

She had been in the colony since the beginning. She was actually a local who had helped identify the best supplies runs, so one would have expected she might have had some brains in that stupid head of hers.

But I think she might have got used to the previous months when the situation was quite better than now.

I don’t know, that’s the only reason I can find on why on earth she decided to grab a bag with half of our supplies and make a noisy run in the middle of the night that attracted those fuckers inside due to the fucking door she had left open.

Oh, I forgot to mention she was on guard that night.

Those sons of bitches caught us while we slept. Took us some tough fight to get rid of all of them and secure the colony once again. Some tough fight and some casualties… Christian and Johnny are dead now…

Fuck you Samantha, I hope you die slowly out there.

February 12th,

Some comfort today: a sunny morning, first one in three weeks, brought us the body of that fucker chewed, maimed and half devoured not three hundred yards away of the main door.

I just hope she took long to die.

We the leaders are meeting again later today to continue yesterday’s discussions on how to proceed now. Even though there are many less mouths to feed after Samantha’s betrayal, there are even less capable arms to defend the colony much longer.

February 21st

It’s us or them now. I hate that it’s come this – I really do. But our species isn’t going to survive without staring down some terrible and hard truths. There’s a core group of us and then there are the tagalongs. The core group makes all the tough calls. It does all the hard work. The tagalongs seem to just be there to eat our food and complain about their inconveniences. Screw them. I say when it’s time to go we leave behind the bickering fools who think every decision deserves a debate and a vote. I say we ditch the moaners who don’t appreciate the concept of a meritocracy. Of course they don’t like that idea – they don’t do anything. Well my mind is made up, and I know the others will agree. We just need to make sure we act quickly when the opportunity presents itself.

February 22nd,

I needed to stay in the colony for a while and help building up some barricades and supplies. The horde was thickening and the blizzard toughening. If we were to keep on going with the plan, we first needed to survive a little longer.

The plan was simple, while Brian and Sparky hit the Police station, Olivia and I would target the Gas station. Meanwhile Mike and Loretta would defend the colony.

Olivia set off early for the Gas station. Traveling alone would drive less attention from the corpses.

I was to follow her soon enough but I got distracted during the construction work. Once I finally got the chance to head out, the winter sun was already low in the horizon, and a chilly North wind had started to blow.

Few minutes later, half way to the station, the big blizzard hit me.

I am still not sure how did I manage to get all the way to the station without freezing death.

I remember the expression on Olivia's face as I walked through the door. She had just started searching the place when the blizzard hit, and from then over she spent the rest of the evening readying herself to spend the night over alone under the logical assumption that I would have preferred to remain at the colony than to expose myself to the impeding storm.

Good thing though, during her short search she already found some valuable items. A very nice gold plated zippo among them that she offered me later once I had recovered.

After the initial shock of seeing me walking in from the storm, Olivia took me to the improvised palisade and shelter she had built for herself in the backroom of the Gas station grocery store and diligently took care of the nasty frostbite that had started to spread from my left foot.

I must have been louder than the storm outside during the cleaning and wrapping procedures with peroxide. Else, I still don't understand how the hell one of those fuckers got to find us in the middle of the nightmarish night.

Olivia mentioned earlier that she had seen two of them roaming around the station once she got there, but that had hoped for them to remain half frozen in the storm.

Well, one of the things must had find its way in because at that moment, it was standing in front of us.

I jumped on my feet.  Yelled and cursed at the pain that burst from my half wrapped wounds when pressed against the cold floor. Grabbed the zippo and a can of mosquito spray that was laying in a self nearby. Flamed the fucking thing like it was a marshmallow.

It worked. Pretty impressive I must say. Although the smell is fucking terrible.

Have to rest now. Need to recover from the almost freezing death experience. Not much to do with the raging storm outside anyway. Really glad Olivia was here to save my life... again.

Gabriel.
