I set aside the drink, taking major's advice. Trying to look serene, I allowed my self a joke.

- I'm not a fan of sci-fi, I'm more like a book worm. But that one, I've seen it. - I smiled back at him. - And you would not be here if you ever thought I'd take the blue pill. We both know you might have more candidates, but you are also a busy man for sure. So, bring me those NDAs* and I'll bring my pen.

Again, I offered him my hand.

- You need not* to say anything else, major. Knowing that Dr. Jackson is behind this, and our life-time work is involved, I'd be more than glad to join you.

Major Samuels shook your hand and smiled you. After reading the documents superficially you signed all of them. Then, Major Samuels told you.

"Well son. You have heard Chairman jerk. You have 10 minutes to leave his office, and you will have a car waiting for you in the west entrance of the university. I think it could be a pity to waste that scotch, drink it and taste it as much as you can, we don't have these fancy things in the air force... and probably you will need some "help" to accept some information."

"Remember, one hour,  west entrance. You have a transport waiting for you in Hanscom air force base to transfer you to Peterson, Colorado"

It wasn't the best meal that you have ever tasted, but it would be enough for a while. You ate mashed potatoes with a hard and gummy substance that could be a beef stew. One thing was for sure, the air force didn't wasted their money in decent meals.

After that, you looked at the folder with a mix of curiosity and respect. What the hell was the Stargate project? 

So you opened the folder and started to read.

In 1928 the Langford expedition found in the plains of Gizah ,Egypt, a big metalic ring inscribed with strange hieroglyphics inside. After some testing during World War II, the project was abandoned because of the lack of a proper technology to operate it properly

In 2017, Daniel Jackson, a Egyptologist and linguist is invited by Catherine Langford to translate the hyeroglyphs in order to run the device. A week later, Jackson determined that the hieroglyphs refered to a "stargate" wich uses constellations as spatial coordinates with a fixed origin point. On this revelation, Jackson is shown that the base has its own Stargate. The SGC used Jackson's coordinates to align the Stargate's metal ring with markings along its outside, and once all seven were locked in, a wormhole was stablished, connecting the Stargate with other one in a distant planet.

A team was sent through the wormhole with a nuclear bomb just in case that the new planet was a serious threat for Earth inhabitants.

The planet, called Abydos and their people Abydonians, was a arid desert planet with people who has been brought there by an alien race called the Goa'uld. Goa'ulds pretended to be human Gods, but their only power was their superior technology, far away for everything known by the mankind at the moment.

The Goa'uld ruling Abydos was, in past because he is dead, Ra. According to egyptian mythology, he was the God of sun and father of the other gods. 

The abydonians, who spoke a variantion of Ancient Egyptian, believed that the SGC teams were emissaries of Ra and treated them as demigods. Through hidden markings and discussions with the tribe, Jackson learnt that Ra was an alien being who had come to Earth during the Ancient Egyptian period, looking to possess human bodies to extend his own life. Ra enslaved these humans and brought some to this planet through the Stargate to mine the mineral that is used in the alien technology. The humans on Earth revolted, overthrew Ra's overseers, and buried the Stargate to prevent its use. Ra forbade the humans in the tribe from becoming literate, fearing another revolt. During this investigation, Jackson came across a cartouche containing six of the seven symbols for the Stargate, but the seventh has been broken off. 

That night, Ra's ship landed atop a pyramid, and O'Neil's men the team were captured or killed by Ra's soldiers. When Jackson, O'Neil, and the other men returned, they ended up in a firefight against Ra's soldiers. Jackson was killed and the others captured. Ra placed Jackson's body in a sarcophagus-like device that regenerated him. Ra then explained to Jackson that he had found the nuclear bomb the humans brought and had used his alien technology to increase its explosive power a hundred-fold, and threatened to send it back through the Stargate. Ra ordered the human tribe to watch as he prepared to execute Jackson and the others to demonstrate his power, but the abydonians created a diversion that allows Jackson, O'Neil, and the others to escape.

Ra sent out fighter ships against the humans while he ordered his ship to take off. The humans outside were forced to surrender to the fighter ships' pilots when they ran out of ammo, but the rest of the tribe, having finally learned of their false gods, rebeled against the pilots and overthrown them.

O'Neil realized that Ra had rigged the bomb to prevent him from disarming it. O'Neil and Jackson decided to use the teleportation system to transport the bomb to Ra's ship. The ensuing blast destroyed the ship in space.

With the humans freed, the remaining team prepared to return to Earth, but there was a problem. The 7th symbol. After some time Jackson figured that the 7th symbol were different in every planet, because the origin was different in every planet. Finally, they used the 6th known symbols plus the unique different glyph of the call home device (the origin) to opened a wormhole to home. All the team returned but Jackson who stayed in the planet for studying their people.

You were so distracted by the report that you didn't notice Major Samuels seated in front of you. He smiled and said to you "I know that it could be hard to believe, but in the air foce we don't have any sense of humour. Did you have understood everything? any doubt?

I'm with out words and really haven't nothing to say... because all of that is incredible. Really a portal to other worlds? an ancient alien race who dominated and slaved the humanity? Yes this guy just said that the air force don't make jokes... but... really.

-Sir, if you don't mind... really I think, this, but... my only question now is if I could have a drink and take some time, this is a bitter pill to swallow. you understant it, don't you? - After a while shaking my head. I try to explain my self. - You tell me to come to Colorado, to be part of a Counter-Terrorist Team and now you show me this? - I breathe heavily while I hold my head in my hand. - Well I think I understood everything and I guess that I said yes and I'm a man of my word so... What do you want me to do?

I couldn't hardly believe what I was reading. Of course, the US Army never would make jokes about those kind of information. I read the report twice, three times to convince myself this was real.

Sir, according with that information, I supose you want us to travel across this  - I read the proper word - Stargate? What is suposed we are going to do?

I exepcted a rescue mission for Daniel Jackson or some kind of military settlement in another planet. I read again and again the report just to try to memorize as much as information as I could.

Major Samuels shrugged and then told you

I don't have that information. You will be fully informed at the SGC by General Hammond. The only think that I know for sure is that we had a breach in the security of the SGC two days before, and since then we have been sent to recruit the very best of our military forces.So, congratulations, you're one of the chosen ones. I know that is tough to believe, but I was there when the stargate was opened the first time... "

He thought for a while looking for the right words and said

I don't know why a lieutenant without any combat experience has been chosen but I'm so sure that your going to have the most challenging destination of all your graduation classmates. Take your time. We were arriving to Peterson in one hour. You should memorize the report because it's not going to follow you to your destination

Major Samuels shrugged and then told you

"I know that is hard to believe but I was there the first time that the stargate was opened. I'm afraid that we don't have the bourbon that you would need to focus on the reading, but I will look for some coffee".

He stood up and dissapeared in the cargo part of the airplane. Two minutes later an airman appeared with some coffee and two cups when the airman was serving you a cup of coffee Major Samuels returned and asked for some coffee. After serving the coffee the airman left you alone to return to this duties

Major Samuels sipped the hot coffee and stared at you with a funny gaze in his eyes

"Son, I don't have the details of your mission. The only thing that i know for sure is that we have had a security breach at the SGC. One sergeant of the US Air Force has been kipnapped.... but the terrorist attack was performed by hostile aliens. So, you're on the counterterrorism business... but your customers are E.T. guys. Try to memorize the report because it's not going to follow you to your destination. We will arrive at Peterson Air Force Base in one hour."

Then he stood up again and slapped in your back gently.

"You were waiting for playing in the big leagues.... And I don't know any league bigger than this"

I was so focused on my work I didn't notice that someone was near me. When I saw the Air Force officer at first I was really confused but then I realised the sample was coming from the government... 

"S-sorry. Good morning, major. Yes, I'm Doctor Davis. To Colorado? Well, of course I'm interested in, that specimen is amazing! Where did they find it?"

Major Samuels stared at you in a way that made you shudder. It was something strange in his gaze. It was no hate, no lush,no hard feelings but something in your guts was screaming that that man was not extremely happy with your recruitment. After the longest 10 seconds of your life he told you

"Is classified. But if you sign me this NDA's you will have the chance to study the specimen. We have talked to your superiors and they have agreed to transfer you to follow your research under the tutelage of the government in order to follow your research with all the means that you could need."

They hand you a ton of documents with the typical NDA clauses of the governement, the most important one is that you will be martial courted in case of revealing any information of the project. So, you wouldn't win the Nobel prize for this research but you could impact greatly in the life of million of people.

Major Samuels stared at you in a intimidating way "What's your decision? This is like matrix, once you have took the red pill it won't be a going back"

If all of this is true, really is a big league. No doubt of it. I turn my head to have a clearly vision of the Major. - Sir, really I don't know if I would call that Terrorism, but in any case kidnap an American soldier is enough to gain the animosity of the American army and as an American soldier my duty is rescue the Sergeant and kick the asses of whoever has committed such act of declaration of war against the United States of America. - With an imperturbable glance, I raise my fist tightly in sign of commitment and I nod. - So, I need to make the most of this time. I'm going to study this if you don't mind.

The intimidating gaze of Major Samuels worked, but I didn't want to look weak so after thinking for a few seconds I stared at him as well and said:

"I take the red pill".

I took the NDA's and signed them. Maybe I could have thought a bit more about it. Maybe winning a Nobel could have been good, but after all I've always been a curious person and I could not pass up an opportunity like this. 

Major Samuels took the documents and looked at them. After a couple of minutes looking for any mistake he seemed to be satisfied by their content.

"Not bad. You will have a car in the north entry of the university in one hour to take you to Luke Air Force Base. When you arrive you will have a transportation waiting for you to take you to Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. If you need to pack your belongings is your chance. If you are not at the pick up point you are out of the business."

And he left the room with a permanent pretentious smile in his lips.

Major Samuels slapped your shoulder again and told you "Take your time son, you are going to do it well. You wouldn't be here if the work didn't fit you. We are arriving to Peterson in 30 minutes"

Major Samuels left you alone with yout thoughts. One thing was fighting against muyaidins and other, very different, was fighting against someone with enough power to blow up the entire planet. It was the perfect job for you.

Just an hour! I couldn't go home and then come back in just an hour... I phoned my mom and explained her that I had been hired for a new job and that I had to leave the town in an hour. I told her to bring me my suitcase to the University and that I will explain it better when she arrived. 

Half an hour later my parents arrived with my luggage. I didn't have many things here at home because my visit was supposed to be just for a few days, but at least I had my medical stuff, my laptop and some clothes. 

I told my parents that they didn't have to worry about it, it was just another research to continue my work in Honduras (I was forced to lie to them...). They understood it and wished me luck as they hugged me. 

"Oh, I have my family portrait in Honduras... How about if we take a picture now? I'll print it when I arrive in Colorado!"

After that, I packed my samples and my lab coat. It was almost time to leave so I hugged them again and said that I love them and that I will call them. 

I left the University and five minutes before the agreed time I was at the pick up point. I felt a bit nostalgic but at the same time I was very excited.

- My first time in Colorado. Never had the time to do much tourism around the States. - I left the glass aside. - Thank you for everything, Major. Will we meet again at Peterson? Otherwise, I wish you the best. I'm... dismissing?

I tried to make some fun, although it did not sound as funny as in my mind. I took the chance to leave the office and headed for my room. For a minute I thought about the possibility of really making an scene. But I decided it was much better if I just never again had to meet Urton. I said goodbye to a few colleagues, took my luggage and went to find the car at the entrance. Excited with new horizons, I could not wait to meet Dr. Jackson again. It'd been a lot of time since we last met, and I had a lot of questions for him. And probably I'd have a dozen more after I got the details from this super-secret project.
