I will inaugurate this scene... I´m running an English language game, it´s been ongoing for over two years now and close to the end. The genre is Western, and the system is Aces&Eights. If someone wants to have a look, I can give VIP passes. My idea is to maybe in the future run more games in English, and it has been a great experience. Also, I would recommend anyone to have a look and try, even if their English is not perfect.

http://www.comunidadumbria.com/partida/justice-in-...

He simply did what had to be done ... It would be easy, he told himself, to throw everything overboard and disclaim any responsibility. All he had to do was saddle up and ride out. It sounded easy, but it was not that easy, even if a man could leave behind his sense of guilt at having deserted a cause. To be a man was to be responsible. It was as simple as that. To be a man was to build something, to try to make the world about him a bit easier to live in for himself and those who followed. You could sneer at that, you could scoff, you could refuse to acknowledge it, but when it came right down to it… there was no other way.

Synopsis

While passing through a small town, a bunch of drunken, trail-weary cattlemen go overboard with their celebrating. They return home to Sabbath, a town run by land baron Vince Bronson, a benevolent despot used to buying out or eliminating any and all opposition. Far away from the railroad and goldmines, Sabbath is a nice quiet town. And an ideal place for those who do not wish to be found.

A few strangers ride into Sabbath... A veteran marshal, his young deputy, a few infamous outlaws, a gambler, a bounty hunter… They all come looking for fame, revenge, pay or... Justice. And in the West, justice was often served with a gun.

The local marshal is close to retirement and now a mere shadow of what he once was. On the other hand, the townsfolk of Sabbath are ready to take matters into their own hands in order to keep the peace.

“Justice in Sabbath” is about the West, and about the men who conquered it. It is also about the choices men are forced to make. And how a man gets caught in his own doing. It is not a simple morality tale of good and evil. Everyone has something to fight for and everyone has something to lose. The cowboys and gunmen of the Bronson clan, the marshal and his deputy, and the others. It all builds up to a final showdown and confrontation.

One way or the other, Justice will be served in Sabbath... Or rammed down its throat!

I´ve been thinking about options for English language game(s) here in the forum... At present I´m about to finish the Western game, and I´m considering running Dead of Winter. Some of you might know the board game, and ever since I tried it I thought it would run well as a forum based game. Last year I tested it here and got some valuable feedback and with a few tweaks it can be great fun. Also, it gives opportunities for character building and interaction, but in my opinion it does not require an extremely high level of English. For instance, if we do Werevolves of Miller´s Hollow (=Castronegro) the players have to try to convince others and use subtle messages and so on. Dead of Winter (DoW) it´s much more straightforward.

For those who do not know the board game, don´t worry as I will post instructions (which are freely available on the Net anyway). A small presentation:

Dead of Winter puts the players in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity is either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. Each player leads a faction of survivors with different characters.

Players are working together toward one common victory condition — but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing.

It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies, and keep the colony's morale up. Dead of Winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

Now the bottom line:

-Nr of players: 4-5
-VIPs? Yes, and there will be a scene for VIP discussion
-Age limit applies (18+)
-When would this start: tentatively speaking, mid-September or end of September
-Duration: I would like to run each round in one week. This allows a few days to discuss strategy, and then each player has to post his/her actions. The mechanics allow for each player to finish their turn completely on their own so this should not be too difficult. So 6 rounds = around 6 weeks. I´m flexible with this, so as long as the player let´s me know I can hold on and wait.
-in English? Of course, everything, including Off Topic and VIP lounge.
-How would I select players: first of all, this game would be exclusive to this English workshop, which reduces the number of potential participants. Then I would randomly choose characters for the candidates to choose from, and each candidate must write a short background for the character of their choice. I will also consider the participation here in the forum, and current level of English. Previous DoW experience is not mandatory, but if someone has played before it´s a plus to have at least one or two in the group. Those who are not selected can choose to become VIPs (in which case they would not be allowed to join the game later) or become "reserve players".

OK, that´s my idea. Please post here if you are interested. Also, if you wish to have a peek at the previous one I ran (in Spanish), here is the link . But I think you need a VIP pass to see it as it was 18+.

Yo, that's a fantastic idea! I've never played DoW, but after a quick peek at the rules it looks really cool. I have to admit I've always been tempted to drive a Werewolves of Miller's Hollow game in English but always pushed back the thought for the same reasons you've explained. This one however, does indeed seem much more straight forward and as such not a big deal on double meanings and complex foreign language explanations :P

Then of course, I am interested in your game :)

Will you be asking for a pm (private message) with further info/descriptions?

Else, I'll be ooo two weeks in September though, returning around the 20th. Thus, if I'm one of the lucky chosen ones, I'd vote for a late September kick off for the game if that's ok with you and everyone else.

Thank you for your interest saecel. End of September start should not be a problem. Once I have the players, I´ll start preparing the game itself, and organize the characters, go over the rules and a few other things like background stories etc. These can be done in a specific private scene instead of PM.

From experience trying to find players or subs for English language game, I have a feeling there will not be a huge number of players to choose from. So at present, fingers crossed we get 3 more. I´m really looking forward to making this happen!

So, anyone else interested?

Count me in Tingwe, I'm on a downward slope with my other games, so I'm quite free.

Cool! Welcome aboard. The other day I chose the scenario. It´s called "Leave It All Behind".

I need to prepare some things yet. Let´s see if a few more players join in. Alternatively, I could post in the general forum beginning of September.

Hi everyone, i'm very interested in practicing my english. It's been a while since the last time that I did that, so forgive me if I make some mistakes.  The game sounds amazing, count with me as one of your potential players.

Greetings,
Gannicus

Hi Gannicus, and welcome to the English workshop :) OK, I count you in as well. So we have 3 players, ideally one more would be nice. Anyone else?

Yeeey!! That´s great, with Akrono there are 4 players. So we´ve got a game!

Before you change your mind, I´ve opened the game here

We can continue there. If someone else is interested, please MP or post here.

Yesterday I posted this to confirm that the Justice in Sabbath game has reached its conclusion. It has been a great experience, a lot of worked but I loved every minute of it.

My goal in the next year or so is to have one English language game running more or less at all times.

This Sunday, if all goes well, we´ll kick off the zombie survival game Dead of Winter - Leave it All Behind. I am really looking forward to this one, and if it goes as well as expected, I will probably run another one (the expected length is 5-6 weeks so they are quite quick).

There is a VIP room to comment and participate, and also you can see all the game rules and mechanics, so if any of you guys is interested in having a look, just send a VIP request and I´ll give you a pass.

Just as we were going to start the Dead of Winter game, one of the players has deleted his account in Umbria. So, we are one player short.

Character is ready, the rule summary is there, and we are eager to start. But we need one more player to survive the zombie apocalypse! The game is very short, I estimate in 5-6 weeks at the most we would have played it through.

Anyone interested, please send me a MP.

Hi everyone!

Alright, I think is about time I start preparing a new game in English. I'll be brief as I don't want to bother you lads and lasses with details on availability or upcoming schedules.

Here's the thing, I've been putting some thoughts in how to drive a game which should naturally be in English due to its content and plot, and that I would also like to conduct and/or participate in. And since one of the prerequisites for a good game to really happen is to have players that come along with the activity, I wanted to ask the community first in order to collect your feedback.

Thus, how many of you would be interested in participate in a game where you interpret contemporary policemen/detectives from the NYPD? I already have an elaborate plot in mind and some game adaptations I wanted to set in motion eventually.

I also have other ideas and/or follow ups from previous games in English here at CU as well, so let me know if the above mentioned topic does not appeal to the general public and we'll discuss other options :)

Cheers!

Or simply "game system".

I'd be interested in participating saecel, if possible and if I get my current games organized. I don't mind the system. Regarding the theme and story, I first thought you meant "film noir" kind of NY detective (Bogart...), but then I read contemporary. Anyways, looking forward to hearing more

Pace: Medium of course. I would like to establish a calendar for my own posts (i.e. every Mon-Wed-Fri, Tue-Fri, or something like that which will ensure 2-3 "turns" or "DM situation/interaction posts" per week), but I know myself and games in other languages a little bit already as to be confident about writing that in stone from the begining... but I'll try :P

System: I've done a quick check and the skills and attributes trees that I believe cover most of the relevant things for such a game seems to be quick and easy (hehehe, love how it translate from the original "quick and easy"... like a quickie... hehehe... sorry, green old man alert!). However, after many quick and easy games, I am not comfortable with the objective dice any longer, so perhaps just a quick and easy d20 adapted for web based system will do.

Thank you, Leonid and Tingwe :)

So, saecel

Murder? kidnapping? Something with a supernatural twist? Realistic? Something like The Wire or something with more of a Diagnosis: Murder vibe? Could my character, hypothetically, be a ninja yakuza?

Jeez, I peed my pants with the ninja yakuza thingy XDDD

The game would be rather on the realistic side. But kinda Hollywood realistic of course, not real life realistic. So no super powers or supernatural stuff. Rather: cops, gangstas, the mob, the Russian mob, the Irish mob, the super mob... well not that one... vice, anti-vice , dealers, corruption, crime, heroism, good cops, bad cops, infiltrates, bla bla bla.

Examples for the general setting:

But of course, nothing will prevent us from getting creative-funny and set the mood for some laughs. That definitely depends on the players and how do they move around of course (and also because my sense of humor might be... well, let's say completely not existent  XD ):

(Surprisingly funny movie I must confess...)

You know, like in all those good all classics as well:

The idea would be that the PCs enroll on a special division as recently promoted/assigned detectives (NYPD organized crime bureau), and start there as newbies assigned as partners to an NPC. All four pairs (4 NPCs + 4 PCs) belong to the division and will try to solve cases and events involved and related (or not) in a larger setting (crime scheme setting) or scenarios (cross related cases). Now the background and past from these 8 characters will incorporate a second layer behind the main plot. What are their motivations? Why did they joined the force and this particular units? Are they corrupt cops? Even infiltrates? Etc, etc. That second layer could be played individually should the players wish to (there is no need to complicate things if that would only get people lost on the main plot)

Any hype or interest at least? ^^
