Mooneyes

Hi, everybody :DDD

Welcome to your fisrt task :) Biweekly, we do a Writing task to improve our writing skills. Who have done the Cambridge Test, the will know about this. About 100-120 word per task, we ask you to do a presentation, informal letter, short story, and whatever in order to entertain ourselves, learn, and have fun :)))

Of course, I do this to, because, as I said, I need all of this to improve my English. For that, I sorry for my poor English XDDXD

So, from this week to 10th of Agust (more or less), we will do this:

You are new, so we need to understand a little bit more about you and your situation, your job, how many years you have studied English, why you study English, and whatever you want :D

So, it's a presentation, informal, and you can say whatever you want ^^

Welcome!

Ok, so, as I have time right now, I did the task ^^ I hope it doesn't have so many mistakes XDXDXD And sorry for it is so long ^^U XDXDXD

Hello, everyone!

I am Mooneyes, and I am 26 years old. I am a lawyer (well, I am trying to be, but I don’t have any job, so I have found it for three years without luck), and I like a lot Criminal Law. Due to that, I studied a Master’s Degree in Criminal Law. It was awesome, and, now, as I wanted to be more specific, and due to the fact that I keep unemployed, I am studying another Master’s Degree: Peace, Security and Defense. My favorite subject was International Humanitarian Law, and I would love a job in International Criminal Court, NATO, NU, or wherever, but, as our economic situation is, well, you know, awful, I would conform myself with a job which lets me survive, and pay the bills.

I have studied English since I was seven, and, until now, I didn’t have any certificate. The last Friday, Cambridge said me that I had passed the First Exam, so I am very happy. Now, I study to get CAE (Advanced exam) or TOFLE… I haven’t decided yet.

I study English because I think it’s my last obstacle to get a job. Nowadays, we need English, although that doesn’t like us, so I think I have to study it, improve it and get a good job.

And, I think that’s it.

Tingwe

Hi,

My nick here is Tingwe. In my work I use English on a daily basis, but I´m not a native speaker. I had to learn the language the hard way. I´ve worked in telecommunications for well over a decade, but I studied Translation. A few years ago, I was considering the possibility to look for a different job. So I did the Master´s Degree in Foreign Language Teaching. But for now, I will stick to the wireless and wired communication terminology and support. It´s not fancy, but it pays the bills.

I do some translations in my spare time, and I am a firm believer in the possibilities gaming offers for English language learning. So I´m pleased to be able to contribute in some small way to this great initiative.

akansha

Hi!

My nickname is akansha (Don't ask me why I didn't use a capital letter at the beginning because I don't really know haha). I am an English teacher. I've been teaching English to Primary School children for the past three years. However, none of them have been at the same school since I am a temporary worker (what we call "interina" in Spain). Hopefully, this situation won't last for long as I just finished and passed the exams to become a permanent public teacher.

About two or three months ago, I sat the exam to obtain the Certificate of Advanced English and successfully passed it with quite a good grade. However, my weakest skill is the written language. That is one of the main reasons that led me to join this workshop. I do use the four linguistic skills at my job. However, considering I teach at Primary School level, the writing I usually do corresponds to a quite basic English. I'm afraid I may eventually lose the ability to write appropriately in the English language. Therefore, I find this a great opportunity to at least keep this skill active and maybe even get better at it.

Besides, I've always liked languages and travelling. I've lived abroad twice (once when I went on Erasmus and another time when I worked as a Spanish language assistant for a school year). I believe languages broaden your horizons and make life more interesting. When you start watching series and reading books in their original language you realise how much you've missed by only relying on the translations. Certain aspects are just impossible to translate.

Well, that's basically all there is to say about myself. I was looking forward to this workshop and hope it’ll be as interesting as it looks.

Notas de juego

Sorry I went over the word limit. Tends to happen..

saecel

Once upon a time, there was a little fella called saecel who lived in a land far far away...

Oh what the hell, let's do this in the right way:

Hi y'all!!

I don't even know where to begin, so I'll go for the easy part: my nick is saecel, which is an acronym for 'Small Airway Epithelial Cell'. I'm a scientist (duh) and have been living abroad 25% of my life. Moved to NYC just after completing my PhD and lived there for four years. Then I moved to Switzerland where I've lived and worked for the last four years (fifth ongoing already). I work in a pharmaceutical company where (clearly) English is the official language. So for the (almost) last decade, I've enjoyed my daily living and working in English.

Thus, I'd consider myself bilingual ('that's what she said') although it would be difficult to properly define and determine the term. Some people argue that you can be considered master of two languages when you dream on both of them indistinctly. Well I've experienced that since long time ago, but I still believe there's a lot of proficiency to be gained. Although many times I've felt the same for the Spanish language, so perhaps the proverb proves to be true and I am bilingual. Who knows I wonder...

Anyhow, as you have seen I love to divert my focus and tend to explain completely unrelated stuff... A result perhaps of way to many episodes of Flying Circus?

'And now, something completely different'

I loved it...

Getting back to the point: Hello again to everyone. Really looking forward to share the little knowledge and expertise I can, and to enjoy times, games and plays with all of you.

Cheers!

Tortugokamikaze

Hi there folks!

It seems that I already did an introduction (more less) in the OffTopic, at least regarding my intentions and feelings toward this workshop, so let's keep it about ME here, as the rest of you have done.

My nickname here (and elsewhere) is Tortugokamikaze, a name with an "easy" explanation: I love turtles (always have, always will), and in my first online games with friends I tended to commit suicide with grenades... Good old Day of Defeat, ahh...

I'm from Zaragoza, the only city in the world with accents in all its syllables, also the one with the longest name in the world. I've lived here all my life and I have seldom travelled abroad, but neither of those facts have kept me from developing what I regard as high skills in English, and my love for the language. Besides school and private teachings, I have always though that my English wouldn't be half as good without the videogames I played early on, before I was 10 and almost none had translations to Spanish, and the Internet, later in my life.

I'm a Chemist, with a Master on nanomaterials (sounds far cooler than what it is in the end), and I'm currently working on my PhD. I'm in possession of a Cambridge Advance Certificate (C1) but I passed with enough grade to make it "equivalent" to a Proficiency (C2), which boosted my ego quite a bit back in the day. Maybe it still shows xD If I'm pedantic, tell me, for god's sake.

Some of this may have already shown from the previous pharagraphs or my messages in the OffTopic or Feedback sections, but I'm a huge fan of Videogames (all kinds), Comics (also all kinds), absurd humour (hence Monty Python, Saecel knows the real deal...), World War 2...

I  think I'm out of gas. Don't know what more to add, so I'll stop here, hoping that I have not exceeded the word limit too much.

Notas de juego

It seems I also tend to digress a little bit...

SeHiiO

Hello everybody.

Here is Sekiito to introduce himself. I am from Spain but lately I have been living abroad. Now I am learning German in the bavarian city of Munich. Here I work in a creche, a job that I really love. Years ago, when I finished Collegue. I did a degree in Early Childhood Education. At that time I would never have spected that I would be working so far from my family and friends and here I am now.

I went first to Ireland, I was interested in improving my english and I saved some money one summer working in a Pub in my village which is in Toledo. With that money I found an offer in internet about an English course in Ireland. Because the economic situation which Spain had (and still have this days) I decided to do that course. I fell in lov with that country since my first day there. The culture, the people everything there was new for me. And I think that the first journey in your live is very important and it´s an experience you never forget.

So when my English course finished I wanted to be in Ireland more time. I tried to look diferent ways to stay there, when I found that I could be an Au-Pair, like a babysitter from another country working and living with the family. The problem was that because I am a boy that was a hard job to find. Then I saw that I could work as a volunteer in a farm, live with the farmers and improve my english there. Thats how I found my first job as a Woofer. I was in 4 different farms doing lots of diferent jobs, meeting lots of diferent people until I finally found my first AuPair family. They had 4 children who I was taking care from. I have lived in that family for a year, then prepared myself for the First Cambridge Certificate, and I passed it.

After that I could have a better job in Ireland. My first job as a teacher in a creche. But it didn´t least to much as the company where firing people because they were losing money. I went back to Spain for a long period of time and then I decided to go back to Ireland and work again as an AuPair. I was another year with this new family, this time minding tripets who were 2 months the day I arrived there. I saw a pictures of them yesterday and they are huge now. I din´t want to stay more than a year as an Au-Pair so I looked for a better job and that is how I found this new oportunity for me.

And now learning a new language. You never know what is coming in your future

Here is my task.

Notas de juego

Hi there ! My nick is TrevorKent, (just Trevor for my friends XD )... Well... To start with, I have to say I hate that every single word I write appears underlined in red XD, it feels like I didn't write anything properly.

I'm from spain, I'm an undergraduate, I'm studing aeroespacial enginery in madrid. I've been studing english since I was a child in the school, but the last year my university requested me to get the B2 english level, then I started to study english out of the school by myself.

In spite of the fact that you ALMOST NEED English to get a good job, I really would like to watch original version movies without subtitles. Learning english also permit you to get acces to computer games that are not translated to spanish XD.

I love drawing, computer games, anime... and this kind of things.

ERTYWERT

Hi all!!!

I'm ERTYWERT. I choose this nick for keyborard name. Right name is QWER, but I hate this one, prefer mine.

I was born in 1976, on march 29th in Alcoy (Alicante). I'm a Sargeant in Spanish Navy, and work as a clerk. But so strange clerk, because I was helmsperson in submarine and minesweeper, flight control assistant at sea and a tactical operations assistant. Nowadays I am posted in Spanish Navy HQ, in Madrid, but I live in Galicia. I`m looking for a post in a frigante or in a booth camp in Ferrol, but it's too dificult to me.

I'm married for ... too many years, and happy married. Two dauthers, four cats, two dogs, and I don´t know how many birds are living on my backyard. The dogs hate birds, and are so happy with cats... The cats are stupids, and bird are free.

Hello there!

Yes, I'm the person who had the idea on the forum thread of naming this workshop as "Inglis Pitinglis". Now you can kill me XD

I'm milady.. (akansha is not the only one who writes her nick without capital letter, haha.. I didn't realize of it too). I work as a teacher too on Primary and Pre-school (or pre-primary, or kindergarten... whatever is called, haha).

I like reading very much and travelling wherever I can go (sometimes abroad, sometimes nearer) meeting new people, new experiences, and having fun most of the time. I love my family and friends, music, cinema, my pets, art.. Normal things, I think. I like taking photos of my environment, not only landscapes but even beautiful graffities on walls, strange sculptures and things like that.

Ps: And on these days when almost everybody wants to catch Pokemons, instead of it I´m able to solve Rubik's cube in many sizes. Nowadays I think I could include that in my curriculum, hahaha.

Branter

Hi there, Branter speaking!

That's why I f*****g love Umbría! We are so different, but so close! I love this website.

Well, after that, I' gonna tell you some things about me. I'm Branter (obviuos xD), I'm 24 and living in Jerez de la Frontera (Frontier's Sherry xDD). I have studied Advertising in university, and I decided to start my own advertising agency, Creatibee (spam!) two years ago.

When I was younger, I was really clumsy with English. But, after some English Camps, and three months living in Oxford, then I fell in love with English. And with any other language. I love learning lenguages. I can speak a bit of French, Italian, German and Chinese, and have passed my B2 exam for English speakers. So I'm a little crazy about them.

Hope you have a gooood time here! ;)

Leonid

Well, hello everyone.

Around here in our community, I am known as Leonid. I'm a 37 years old video game designer (which can be, and often is, way more boring than it sounds) born in Madrid- although I lived most of my life in Gijón, Asturias, way up in the north amongst the direwolves, white walkers and the less known but equally terrifying locals. I have been living in Germany since 2011, though, for work reasons (I currently live in Berlin).

My personal story with English started, as many do, with video games. I kind of grew more and more attached to the language as I went on, plowing through the Oxford University Proficiency and Higher exams first, then through a BA in English Language and Literature. Since the videogame industry is a fairly multicultural place where underpaid and overworked people from all around the world meet and work together, I've been using English as my daily workplace language since 2008.

I am here mainly for the forum and the chance to learn about games held in English- or to promote mine should I decide to make them- but I don't plan to shy away from meeting other Umbrians and helping out wherever I can. My other hobbies include literature, role playing games, videogames (duh...), basketball and avoiding speaking German, despite the fact that I am mildly competent on it and live in a country where it´s the official language.

elfmgp

Hello everybody,

I am elfmgp ... Why? Because it was my nickname when I played a long time ago to arcade videogames in public spaces. I love RPGs since 1986 (D&D, Red Box, my first love when I was a kid). Today I play (as Game Master) Pathfinder (Pahtfinder Society!!), OSR, (maybe 5E) and I read but play less Cthulhu, Pendragon, Star Wars (great games) and indie Games (like Fate).

Why do I try to improve my English level? I have studied English at Offical School of Language (6#, B2 Cambridge). But since 2009 I dont study any more. I read a lot of English (books, manuals, articles, modules, ...) and sometimes (2015) I play some Play by Post games but I think that I probably made a lot of mistakes.

Thanks to all!!

Hello

My nickname is Melpo but I really don't like it. I use it because Melpomene was already taken, but I ask everybody to address me as Mel or Meli.

I've been studying English since I was 7 years old and I used to hate it. When I became older I realized it was very useful because there were lots of books I want to read that were not translated into Spanish. And, of course, TV series (anyone who had seen, for example, "Brooklyn nine nine" with its original audio and then the translated version would understand what I'm talking about).

I practice "reactive" English, I read and watch TV series. But I don't have many ocassion to practice "proactive" English as talk or write (well, I could do it by my self but no one will tell me my mistakes). That's the reason why I'm so excited about this.

Hi, my name is Tobi and I am a dog.

Yes, I am a real dog.

As you can imagine, Tobi is not my firstname or surname, it's just my nickname. I need a nickname because humans don't understand the languaje of dogs. My real name is a fragance: Urine-567444. If you can smell this fragance at some corner, you can bet I've been there.

This is the third languaje I'm trying to learn, first i tried to understand Spanish and a variety of Portugese spoken in northwestern Spain.

I'm very happy to join you on this adventure and learn from all of you. Perharps in the future, I could help you with another tasks that I'm really good, like findindg sticks, chasing rabbits or expelling cats from my territory.

These days, I'm waiting for Olimpic Games, I've heard that there are competitions where runners run after hares, I had heard that in the past, but as much as I tried I never could see the hare. I've great expectations this time because I've a bigger television.

A loving GUAU (spanish term for Woof) for all of you.

Faris

Hi! My name is Faris. My parents chose that name because is the name of a pirate princess with a dragon friend in Final Fantasy V. Why choose between pirates or princesses when you can be both (and have a dragon friend, besides that)?

I always found English annoying, but necessary sometimes, and after high school I tried to avoid it as much as I could because I thought that I was unable to learn it. Until my boyfriend persuaded me to try to read certain comic that wasn't translated to Spanish. "You can do it", he said. "It's easier than you think", he said. I said that I couldn't do it but I tried anyway. I got hooked on the comic, and read all of it. And then some others. And I got better at it (reading English, not reading comics). I still think that English has a lot of infuriating things, and languages shouldn't have so many sounds and the relation between how you write something and how you read something should make sense, but at least I can understand it, and this year I got my C1 title.

LadyMidday

My nick here in Umbria is LadyMidday ( Hi all!! )

I have been studied English from our old 6ºEGB (jajaja  I am old, yes I know it!) but, as you know, so time ago, learning English was a very silly task at school. My teacher was a philosofy teacher who had to teach English to full his timetable. Then he didn’t know English really. And he was my teacher during five years ( imagine it!!! )

Then, as a result of this, and because I knew English was ( and is! ) very useful at work, I decided to study it myself. I have been in some academies too. In fact, the last year I passed the B2 Cambridge Exam. I would like to prepare the C1, but I need time for that.

I use English at work, as I am an employee of an international company which has offices in a lot of countries (Spain, Portugal, France, EEUU, Australia, Egypt, etc). Normally, I write emails, answer to phone calls, assist to meetings,… all of these in English as the common language of the company.

I don’t think I have a very good level of English only the necessary level to do my job correctly. I try to improve it, but it’s difficult when I am working all day. Sometimes, I don’t check my writings and, as result, I make some basic mistakes.

I hope here, with you all, we can improve it and spend funny momments together!!

hikari_undomiel

Hi, everyone!

I’ve read all your stories and I find them very interesting and inspiring, thank you for sharing them ^^

My nickname is Hikari and I’ve studied Translation and Interpreting with English and French as foreign languages. I worked as a Spanish language assistant for a year in France, then I came back to Spain, I tried to look for a job here but I couldn’t find anything. At that point, I was sure that I wanted to become a teacher, so I decided to study the master’s degree in Foreign Language Teaching. Next year, I will sit the public examination to become a teacher, and I’ll start to prepare it in September.

Even if I hold a Translation degree, I think that I should keep studying and that there is still room for improvement. It’s been a long time since I spoke and wrote in English (I read and listen to it every day), and I feel that there is still a long way to go, but I am going to work harder in order to keep learning and improving :)

Nice to meet you all of you, I hope that we will learn a lot from each other ^^
