REVERSE READING

Imagine you had written a nice story for the English workshop, but you lost it or the dog ate it or whatever. You are asked to answer a few questions about the story you do not have, but you more or less remember what it was about (after all, you had written it!). So first, you have answer these questions:
PART I:
-What was Mr Smith's job?
-What was he going to do?
-Why?
-What was the weather like?
-What did he decide to do after that?
-What didn't he want to do?
-Why?
-What was the surprising end?

The answers should be no longer than one sentence each, and obviously these need to make sense.

PART II
After you have done Part I, you need to construct a story about Mr. Smith. Pay attention to appropiate linking words (however, afterwards, all of a sudden, so, next...).

Part II

Mr Smith was a day late to deliver the mail in Oak Highs. It was not his fault, really, some people had really rude dogs that didn't know the difference between a postman and a thief, so he had to go to the doctor for stitches and to his house for new pants, and he hadn't had the time to complete his route. He really really hated dogs. They barked, they were scary and the bited and clawed the mail and packets.

He throwed his jacket in the back of the van-the weather was sunny and it was too hot inside the van now for it- and checked the next house in the route. The Mortimers. He sighed. Oak Highs was home to some well-to-do families, and some of them were a bit...¿persnickety?¿elitists?¿jerks? It was just a day, but they sure were going to give him a hard time about it. And it was a pet delivery. He went ot the back of the van and and got the cage...the very empty cage. He was sure that it wasn't empty when he got his deliveries for this morning at the posthouse, it had a small brown puppy. A very cute puppy, even if he didn't like dogs. And then he saw it, the lock was open. He looked for the poor puppy in the van with no luck. He had problably ran away in one of the stops.

Mr Smith decided to make a pause and get breakfast. If he was going to be scolded, he would feel better with a full belly. He drove to the nearest cafe, got his jacket, went inside and asked for bacon and eggs. No sooner has he sat and was the plate in front of him that he heard and "yip" and a small puppy jumped from the pocket of his jacket to his lap and then to the table, got a bacon strip and started chewing it.

-Well, there you are. But that is my breakfast-Mr Smith tried to frown to the little puppy. The puppy didn't seem very worried. He sighed-Fine, that is yours. At least you are not lost.-he said, and scratched his little head with a finger.

Finished their shared breakfast, they went to the Mortimer's house. Not to explain that their pet were lost but to give them their mail and their pet. They didn't seem happy. Apparently, he had ruined their litle kid birthday because the dog had not been on time. The kid, a 12-years-old or so, looked annoyed and just said that he wanted "Lethal Knives V: Fury of the Dragon" like all his friends, and not a stupid dog. The father jabbed his finger on Mr Smith's chest and explained to him in a very angry voice how stupid Mr Smith was.

And the puppy...well, the puppy looked at them, looked at Mr Smith, and them peed in the very expensive carpet.

That day, Mr Smith got a new pet and discovered that he didn't hate all the dogs.

Part II

Mr Smith was a bartender but he was special, different from the rest of the people that works in a pub. Mr Smith didn't speak too much. He just served what his clients asked however he did that in silence. No questions about the weather, no complains about sports, no politics opinions... left his mouth ever.

One day a young couple came into his bar. They sat in the table at the corner. Mr Smith went to ask them what they want to order and, after that, Mr Smith return to the back for preparing the drinks. While he was doing it, the couple began to argue. Their voices were getting louder more and more. Mr. Smith really didn't want to listen but it was impossible.

The discussion turned into an ugly one. The woman was screaming and a lot of insults came out of his mouth so Mr. Smith decided to interfere. He approached the couple and he made a sign in order to get heard.

-Madam, this is an open local. People of all ages are welcome. I commend you to use a more polite language otherwise I feel obligated to show you the way out-

The woman turn into red but no because she was embarrassed. She turned red with anger. She pushed her chair and ran away.

The man, with a sad face, began to cry. Mr. Smith went to make a tila and he brought it to he man. The he sat at the chair where the woman was sitted and asked the man about the relationship. The man told him everything. He began with the story about how they met and he ended on why they were fighting. The woman was married and she didn't want to divorce. The man felt she had cheated him.

When the anonymous man left the bar, Mr. Smith felt a warm sensation. He felt he had helped the man by listening him.

It was surprisingly cloudy and dark for August in Las Vegas (Nevada)

He did not want to return to the hotel room to watch TV alone.

-Why?

-What was the surprising end?
Suddenly, Dr Wang disappeared before his eyes.

PART II

Mr Smith went through his notes one last time before entering the hotel lounge. As he tried to make out the complex diagrams and understand the complicated scientific concepts, he again noticed how dark the sky was that day. The clouds were greyish and they seemed to cover all of Las Vegas creating a bubble around the City of Sin. It was August, so the temperature was high despite the lack of sun. It was his first visit here, and he was eager to finish the interview with Dr Huachu Wang, the famous scientist who had changed the way people considered the Universe. Well, at least those people who could understand the complex algorithms of quantum physics. Mr Smith was no expert in this field, but he had been given a list of questions to ask and a plane ticket to Las Vegas. He was hoping to get the job done quickly, and spend the rest of the afternoon and night playing in the casinos. He was in Vegas after all, so he was not going to stay in his hotel room watching TV.

-Could you explain to our readers, in simple terms, your theory about time and space being two aspects of the same “palpitating force”?, Mr Smith asked Dr Wang. This was the fourth question he read from his list. Only a few more to do, he thought and checked his watch again.

-I could, but before going into the conclusion of my studies, one should look at the beginning. One can only understand the path once you are on the path, Dr Wang replied and Mr Smith tried not to yawn. –The Universe, as we know it, is only a reflection, or multitude of reflections, of a primal source and ...

Puff.

-What the hell?! – these were the only words that Mr Smith was able to mutter. All of a sudden, the famous scientist had vanished into thin air. For a few minutes, the reporter looked around for a hidden camera. Nothing. Then he checked his watch. It had stopped.

Outside, the skies were even darker. And the sounds from the casinos had stopped. The world stood still. The Universe had paused. The beginning of the end...

Watching TV alone in the hotel room did not seem that boring now.
