Hurd Price

Hurd's heart started beating faster as he saw the animal laying on the ground. He looked around franctically, expecting to find his friend's body next to the horse. But Vern was not there, it seemed. He felt some relief, then confusion. What the hell was happening? Was it Maddox? Or maybe some of the Bronson men? Maybe someone found out they were gonna run and... No, it couldn't be...

But this was not the time for thinking. Hurd checked his shotgun, making sure it was ready for action, then walked towards Vern's horse to have a closer look, while keeping a nervous eye on the surroundings.

Hurd was not considered an expert tracker, but the marks on the ground told a tell-tale story. This time, he was certain. A man had ambushed Vern, hiding behind some rocks further up the hill. There was an empty shell from a rifle, and it didn´t look familiar, like the ones Vern used. Hurd could envision a man with a rifle in this position, and how this man had fired at Vern.

But the bullet had hit the horse, throwing Vern off his saddle to a nearby rock. Then… Hurd could not help but to gasp. There were blood stains that were not from the horse! A second shot had been fired, from closer range. It had sounded earlier like the echo of the first, but there had been two shots fired for sure.

Finally, tracks from a single horse leaving the area, and heading towards Sabbath. All the leads seem to indicate one thing, and one thing only. Vern had been captured by the lawman.

Hurd felt a cold sweat freeze even his bones, and he was numbed for what seemed hours. His hands were shaking as he put the shotgun back into the holster on his horse. Then, he mounted the animal. Inside, he was panicking. But he moved calmly as he directed his horse Lucky towards the path heading south.

He was afraid. He had no problem admitting this to himself. He would ride as far as he could away from all this mess. Away from the lawman, away from Sabbath, away from justice…

But then he heard a familiar voice from behind his back, from the distance…

-How you doin'? -What happened here?
