Hi guys. I said it on the "Lecture Club" section (go read that so I don't repeat myself xD) but maybe that name is not accurate. Any ideas for renaming it?

Yeah, you are right XDXDXDD Ok, we can change it ^^ I put "Sharing Section" ^^ Is it better now? :)

I´m back from my holidays, nice to see more new faces joining the workshop! Hi all :)

I missed some interesting discussions, too bad. Just one thing regarding this:

"I speak Spanish to God, Italian to Women, French to Men, and German to my Horse"

I heard this expression as: "I speak French to my wife, Italian to my mistress, German to my enemies, English to my allies and Spanish I reserve to speak to God". If I remember correctly, this was Carlos V, who actually spoke quite a few languages and was married to a French lady. Not sure if correct, but that is how I heard the quote.

Also, the new task is on, I´ve decided to open fire with the first short story. Don´t be too harsh XP

All right, except the wife of Charles the fifth was Isabel of Portugal, and obviously she wasn't french.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, I´m not very good in Spanish history :) I did a quick wikiquote search, and it does seem the original quote said "German to my horse", even though there are a few variations. But it was definitely Charles the First of Spain and Fifth of Germany so at least I remembered the king right. Regarding the wife and lovers, not sure. I saw he had some well known Italian sounding ladies in his life (with whom he had a few kids it seems), and I cannot see anything about him speaking Portuguese. Maybe he spoke French to his wife who was Portuguese? Or most likely, I misquoted and he did not speak to his wife at all!

I remembered the quote from a course about prejudice in languages, how certain languages "sound" good or bad. There is a Youtube video which is sort of related, it´s not that funny but I share it anyway. It´s a girl who speaks gibberish (unintelligible or nonsense) but mimics the accent well.

Very nice article Faris. Jeez, I laugh so loud when reading the Guitar Wine experiment...

We should open our own debate here about this topic: how do we feel about strict adherence to rules, instructions and mechanics when playing a game? How flexible/relaxed we are about them?

Notas de juego

btw, y'all are quite in a dark, grim mood this month with your short stories, aren't you? Not saying I'm not enjoying them, mind you, but oh my they're sad...

Very good job though ;)

I don't mind Masters changing the rules, as soon as they are clear about it and they talk with the players about it before applying them (no changing the rules because you don't like the results of a dice throw)

Furthermore, I think that most Masters have their own house rules, even if they are some minor variation from the official rules, or something that was not considered in the official rules.

Leonid, I love your corrections and I learning a lot.

That said

He helped his two minions put out the small fire in the refrigeration units,

Not an error, but in the rest of the text the pronoun you use to refer to the character is "she". Travestism, ho! ;P

It was a stupid joke, but I alternated masculine and feminine pronouns and posesive articles. Because the main character is a (fallen) angel. And you know what they say about the sex of the angels

I didn't say that it was a very good joke :P

Hey, I finally have a couple of minutes to come here and write my thanks to Leonid. I could deduce, from the feedback I received, that my english is a bit old. I'm 39 years old... my love for english started more that 20 years ago, so maybe this is a good oportunity to improve my knowledge of the language. Also, I know that when I write stories I tend to be very figurative, extremely metaphorical  even. This is a bad habit I haven't been able to attend since long ago. But hopefully this will change soon, with you help.

So, thank you Leonid.

I also have so many questions... I don't know exactly how does this party works.. what are my responsabilities as a member of this group? Next weekend I'll have some more free time to come and read all the scenes you have here. See (read) you guys later.

You must sign a legal contract transferring all of your legal possessions to Leonid, and must be reachable by him by phone or e-mail at least during 12-hour periods a day in case he needs to contact you to have you perform certain tasks like mowing his lawn or bringing him coffee.

Ah, if only...

Nah. You have no obligations. You can just join in in the conversation and tasks, provide clarifications or corrections on other people's work, share learning resources you know of, announce join games held in English or just chat in english and practice that way. You have no obligation to do anything, really.

I've been playing for quite some time, yes. Now I play a bit less because I'm something like lv. 150+ in all skills and I can only really get into the Exceptional Stories or the really grindy parts. (Or keep seeking Mr. Eaten´s name and lose all those levels XD), but I still love it. I´ll send you a PM with my user if you want to be friends there, since I´m not sure if community rules allow to link directly here.

Yeah. Be careful when you put a link, because of the Umbria' s rules, and Intellectual and Property Laws ^^

Fallen London it's a free browser text based game, sort of a choose-your-own-adventure, in a Gothic Victorian setting. You can pay for certain things to gain acces to more stories or advance faster, but the basic game is free. And you can't pirate it, unless you copy the whole web XD (I think. Most of my knoledge of computery things consist in knowing which button to press to turn on the thing)

I think that the setting is interesting, and the stories and characters are well made, but some of the mechanics are based in grinding things to gain access to new content, and grinding is not something that I appreciate.

Ey!! I read all yours homeoworks. They are great!!!!

how do we feel about strict adherence to rules, instructions and mechanics when playing a game?

I understand why some people love games with a lot of rules. But I'm too  lazy. I like games with few and basic rules. If I have to invert more time to understand my move than the time I need to made a move... sigh!

Fallen London

Oh! It sounds amazing. I love Victorian ages but I don't like vampires.

It doesn't have vampires (unless the mysterious Masters of the Bazaar, the ¿people? who control everything in Fallen London, are vampires). It has, however, mummies

The Tomb-colonists

The dead, the near-dead, the forgotten. Perhaps we will all end up that way. They deserve your sympathy and your efforts.

Golems

The Clay Men

They work. They inhabit the Clay Warrens. Many in London see them as mere automata, slaves without souls. Is this true?

and...ehm...other things kinds of people

Rubbery Men

The Rubbery Men twitch their tentacles when they see you, and make a sound like water over stones...

Very good stories overall for the task nr2. Keep ´em coming guys.

Regarding Adherence to rules, it´s very much a personal preference and depends on the game system, group of players and other factors. I like to have a clear idea of the rules involved, but I don´t mind if the rules are bent for a reason. I see it as an issue of trust. When I have to decide or rule something, if I don´t know the players too well I tend to stick to the rules a bit more. Also, I feel the changes to the game mechanics are more acceptable if the GM actually knows the original rules, and decides to make a change. Otherwise it can become very arbitrary. Don´t get me wrong, I also like systems that are not too heavy on the mechanics, but the ones that have the charts, the rolls, the bonus & the works... Well, it´s a good idea to know the system a bit before changing it.

Enough chatting, I´ll be posting soon in the UMP (Umbria Meeting Point) regarding some yet-to-be-disclosed possible Role-Playing Related Unknown Activities (=RPRUA)...

I try to. This is actually the way I would have liked to correct my pupils back when I actually taught, but well.

Wait...

You wanted to correct your pupils talking about memorable butts and tellin them that the things they wrote made you horny?

I...I think that I know why you don't teach anymore.

It's because of the use of copyrighted images, isn't it?

Yup. I don´t remember much about it. One day, some SGAE guys just dropped by and the rest is blank. I vaguely remember a dark place, people in lab coats and Ramoncin´s "Litros de alcohol" sounding faintly in the background. Then darkness.

More seriously, though, someone ought to talk about those kinds of things more. See, when I did the CAP (the "teacher´s course" you are forced to do if you want to be able to concur to the state teaching exams), my tutor decided me to give me a rundown of all teachers did, including e.g. to keep watch on the playgrounds and to actually give some of the sex education classes. I seriously couldn't believe what I was hearing during the discussion parts.

Even today, teens just eat up a bunch of made-up myths about sex, pleasure and even the actual workings of the body and reproduction as actual fact, and it's baffling how little they know, on average, about the entire thing. I can hardly believe that we're still like this, in the time of the Internet (ok, back then internet was not what it is today, but most people already had it, for God´s sake). Well, more like, I can believe it, actually. And it´s damn unsettling, let me tell you.
