There are number of different gambling games one can find in a Saloon or other places of the Wild West. Most are a mixture of luck and audacity, with very little actual skill involved. There are of course skill-based board games such as chess, but these are not represented in the same way during gameplay. This section is for gambling, that is, for games where luck is a significant factor.

We will go through the following mechanics for the following games:

---------------------------------

DICE GAMES

FARO

POKER

MISCELLANEOUS GAMES: Roulette, Three Card Monte

--------------------------------------

The basic rules are represented. None of the games has an actual skill that you can develop, except Poker (where you can use your "gambling"-skill). The rules for poker are more detailed, being it a very iconic element of many western stories.

Note that "Gaming" skill is for games where gambling is not a significant factor, such as checkers, checks, dice games... Instead of playing the game out, the skill can be used. If both characters have the skill, 5d20+Gaming skill is rolled. This skill can also be used for cheating, a success on the skill check gives +10% chance of winning.

DICE GAMES

Craps (2d12): if the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the first roll, he wins. He may throw and bet again, or pass the dice to another player. However, if he rolls a 2,3 or 12 on the first roll, he loses. If the first throw is 4,5,6,8,9 or 10, he continues to throw until he again rolls the same number and wins, or throws 7 “craps out”) and loses both his bet and the dice.

Chuck-A-Luck (3d6): Punters (“players”) place their wagers on a layout labeled “one” through “six”. When all the bets are down, the dealer chucks three dice. Players win even money (1:1), double (2:1) or triple (3:1) depending on the results.

High Dice (2d6): Players simple 1:1 odds that they can beat the dealer. On a roll of 2, each player immediately wins even money, while on a roll of 12, the dealer takes all wagers. On any other result, the dealer uses chalk to indicate his score. The player on the dealer´s far left then rolls the dice versus the dealer´s score. If the result is higher, the player wins even money. The dealer wins all ties.

Under and Over (2d6): players simply place their wagers for a result of under seven (2-6) or “over seven” (8-12). On a win, they get even money. Alternatively, punters may wager on a roll of 7 (4:1). Variant dealer rules may include other combination such as 15:1 odds for double 6s.

FARO

Faro: one or more play against the dealer (“bank”), who shuffles a standard deck of cards and places it face down on the table. Also on the table is a faro board, which displays each card rank. Layout is in two rows, with the cards running a counter-clockwise manner, so the upper row displays the 6 through the Ace (left to right) and the lower row the 8 up to the King. Off to the left, between the two rows, is the 7. The Ace is always the lowest card in Faro.

Players then place wagers directly on the faro board. A chip placed directly on the card means that the player is “backing” only that card rank. Players may also bet on multiple card ranks by placing a chip between a pair of cards. This is called “splitting”.

Players then place wagers directly on the faro board. A chip placed directly on the card means that the player is “backing” only that card rank. Players may also bet on multiple card ranks by placing a chip between a pair of cards. This is called “splitting”. For example, if a player splits the 10-Jack (putting his chips directly between 10 and the Jack), he wins his full wager on a 10 or a Jack. Players who place their chips between the 6,7 and 8 are “betting the pot”. On the other hand, placing chips between four adjacent cards is known as “square” bet.

Once all bets are down, the dealer discards the top card of his deck (known as the “soda card”). The next card displayed is the losing card, which the dealer places on his right, next to his deck or box. The dealer (or house) wins any bets placed on the losing card.

The next card drawn is the winning card. For example, if the winning card is a 7, all players who bet on the 7 (either by backing, splitting or betting the pot) win. Players who bet on other cards may leave their bets on the same card for the next draw, remove them from the board or move the bet to another card. New players can also join the game in between turns. Once all bets are down, the dealer draws another winning card, and the process repeats itself.

Players may also “copper” their first wager by placing a penny or token on top of their chips. This reverses the bet. The player now wins on the losing (first) card and loses on the winning (second) card. Another option for the first wager is a “high card” bet – betting that the winning (second) card will be higher than the losing (first) card. This bet may also be coppered (reversed).

To keep track of which cards have been played, players make mental or written notes, or watch the “coffin”.

POKER

Poker: Standard five-card draw poker (also known as “bluff”) is very popular. Played with three to seven players, each player is dealt five cards. The players, starting from the left of the dealer, then bet or fold out. The remaining players each have the opportunity to replace zero to four of their cards with new ones from the deck. After another round of betting, the cards are revealed with the highest poker hand winning the pot.

Unlike faro, poker is much more prone to cheaters.

Poker hands (from highest to lowest): Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, Pair, High Card.

PLAYING POKER:

* Each simulated hand represents several actual hands of poker.

* Play is standard five-card draw. However, a player may only fold out on a successful gambling skill check (average difficulty).

* A player may elect to cheat by attempting a (difficult) Gambling skill check. Failure accords no penalties but success allows the cheater to receive 5 additional cards drawn from a second deck is (“cheating deck”). This deck is differentiated from the honest deck (eg. different design on the cards). The successful cheater may now build his hand with a combination of the cards he has fairly dealt as well as the cards he received from the cheating deck.

* He may draw cards from the honest deck after any initial raises as per normal poker rules.

* The final hand, comprising cards from both decks, can only be formed into legitimate poker hands (no five of kind!).
These extra cards allow the player a tremendous advantage. However, this comes with risks. If the player stays in to the end and reveals his hand, all other players should observe his cards to see if any of the cards he may have played from the cheating deck duplicate cards in use from the honest deck. If a duplicate card is noted, the fellow players may now attempt to catch him red-handed.

* Characters may roll on this table once per duplicate card they are aware of. All characters are eligible to roll for any duplicate cards that are revealed when the pot is claimed (which may be none if every other player folds!). Individual players may also roll on this chart if the winning hand contains a card that they held in their hand even if they subsequently folded.

* Anyone catching another character cheating may take action as he sees fit.

* Once the winning hand is determined and any potential cheating is resolved, any cards from the cheating deck are set aside. A player still holding cards from the cheating deck which he opted not to play may either keep these cards or discard them along with any cheating cards that were used.

* The cheating deck should not be reshuffled until less than half the deck remains.

* During next hand, a character(s) may once again attempt to cheat and draw cards from the cheating deck. He is, however, limited to having no more than five of these cards in his hand at any given time.

HOUSE RULES

* Chips: each player starts with 10 chips. It´s possible to start with less, but the game is agreed for 10 chips maximum, and the value of each chip is what makes the game a “high-stake” (more than $5 per chip) game or “low stake” (50 cents or $1 per chip) game.

* To simulate a deck of cards, we roll 1d4+1d12 for each card. Card nr 10 is removed, so the sequence is A-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-J-Q-K. Results 10 (J), 11 (Q) and 12 (K). Straight and straight flush obviously go from 9 to J as there are no 10s.

* It´s important for GM to keep track of cards played on each hand, since the same card should not appear again (unless it comes from the cheating deck). If a card is repeated, it is rerolled by GM. This is why even the rolls for cards for each character should be kept hidden.

* Bluffing by NPC. This is a bit tricky. Normally, the GM would play as a NPC character, but in this interface the GM can actually see all the cards. To avoid suspicion, the following house rules apply:

1) As per standard rules, a player with no gambling skill is not allowed to fold. Combined with the cheating deck, a player without gambling skill faced with a gambler is in a tremendous disadvantage. He cannot fold, he cannot catch a cheater…
To extrapolate, the gambling skill helps to fold, and works against “calling the bluff”. Basically, a seasoned gambler is more inclined towards calling the bluffs than folding. This can actually work against him, as he might go for it even with a pair of two´s! But that´s gambling, the better you are, the more risks you might take.

2) So, whenever a player with a gambling skill is faced with the decision to call a bet, he makes a gambling roll. The roll is modified by the value of the hand he is currently holding and the amount of chips he is asked to bet.
Modifiers from the hand (the better the hand, more difficult it is to fold)

- Excellent hand (A): Royal Flush,Straight Flush, Four of a Kind => -80%
- Very good hand (B): Full House, Straight                            => -40 %
- Average hand (C): Three of a Kind, Two pair                       => 0 %
- Poor hand (D): Pair, High Card                                          => +40 %

Modifiers from the chips:

Each chip that the player is asked to bet                             => +1 %
If the bet is “All-In”, in addition to the % from chips               => +10%

Mayer deals the cards to each player and then to himself.

Notas de juego

Remember, if you wish to fold you need to pass a gambling check. Same goes for the other players, so unless they have some gambling skill, they cannot even try to fold.

At any point, you can try to gain an extra advantage by getting extra cards.
