I will improve again some skills:

Camouflage => BP 2
Climbing => BP 2
Hiding =>  BP 2
Hunting =>  BP 1
Listening =>  BP 1
Observation => BP 2
Riding => BP 5
Tracking => BP 5

One BP left

The cost seem OK for the 1st purchase, but the 2nd and 3rd purchase of each skill are accumulative more expensive.

Camouflage (you have 1 purchase) => 1st purchase 2 BP, second 8 BP.
Climbing (1) => 1st is 2 BP, 2nd 4BP
Hiding (1) =>  1st is 2BP, 2nd 5BP
Hunting (1) =>  1st 1BP, 2nd 6BP
Listening (1) => 1st 1BP, 2nd 6BP
Observation (1) =>1st 2BP, 2nd 8BP
Riding (2) => 1st -, 2nd 5BP, 3rd 5BP
Tracking (1) => 1st 5BP, 2nd 14BP

So for the above skills, the cost for a new purchase are:

Camouflage (you have 1 purchase) => 1st purchase 2 BP, second 8 BP.
Climbing (1) => 2nd 4BP
Hiding (1) =>  2nd 5BP
Hunting (1) => 2nd 6BP
Listening (1) => 2nd 6BP
Observation (1) 2nd 8BP
Riding (2) => 3rd 5BP
Tracking (1) => 2nd 14BP

Ok, I was thinking of spending some BPs. I've made a selection of skills that sound useful for a farmer, would you mind telling me the BP costs for them? By the way, last time I downloaded the spreadsheet. I tinkered with it a bit and tried to build Hurd's character sheet following what you talked with the previous player, but maths beat me when I got to the skills part :/

These are the skills I have in mind:

Accounting
Administration
Agriculture
Animal Empathy
Animal Herding
Animal Lore
Carpentry
Salesmanship
Reading Comprehension (unrelated to farming but I'd like to make reading kind of a trademark for the character)

And I think that's it, unless you want to recommend anything else.

Also, you said above that we can improve Accuracy and Speed by surviving gunfights, how does that work?

Seems we have a little technical problem... I've been trying to post in the Goods & Services scene, but for some reason I can't. The "Añadir Mensaje" button is not there (as if the scene was closed or something).

Riding (3rd purchase, 5 BP) is now 32%. Tracking is now 50%. I´ve added the new BP, Reputation and Fame from the scene “Guns For Hire!”, and uploaded the character sheet.

I´ve updated the sheet, you have 14 BP to spend but I guess you will wait to get more gunfight experience as you said. The cost is 17BP (20BP-3 gunfights=17), so you´re almost there.

Regarding the BPs: when Hurd´s character was created, there was a weird hickup with the BPs and original skill purchases

I noticed there was a weird mistake on your character sheet, I had placed a random roll in the wrong place and that´s why you had too many BPs to spend. I´ve made some adjustments, and updated the sheet. You still have spend 26 BPs too many, but since many of the skills were related to administration and farm work and such, it is not really a game balance issue. Basically the new BPs you earn from each scene will be deducted from the BPs you have already spent.

So it was agreed that 26BP from future scenes would be deducted (so we did not have to create the character all over again). What I will do is deduct half of the BP for this scene, so you still get 13 BP and 4 BP you already had for a total of 17BP to spend. Skill costs:

Accounting: 3BP (1st)
Administration: 8BP (2nd)
Agriculture: 3BP (3rd)
Animal Empathy: 4BP (2nd)
Animal Herding (Cattle): 1BP (4th)
Animal Herding (pick animal): 3BP (3rd)
Animal Lore: 2BP (2nd)
Carpentry: 2BP (1st)
Salesmanship: 5BP (1st)
Reading Comprehenshion/Penmanship: 12 BP (3rd purchase)

Hurd is a very quick learner, but his social skills are more difficult for him and he often is considered less intelligent than he is. I think Reading Comprehension fits the character nicely. However, the cost is quite high. There is another skill, “Current Affairs” which is also interesting and plays the part for a man curious about what´s going on in the world. The cost is 3BP (3rd purchase). The skill description is:

This skill helps a character know the goings-on in the world around him. He tries to keep informed of all the latest developments in any region. The information obtained is always  publicly available knowledge and never secret or classified information.

As to the gunfight experience, each gunfight survived is noted and Speed and Accuracy are improved accordingly. For instance, with 1 gunfight experience prior to the Cattle Drive, you had 5 Speed and 0 Accuracy. Now, with 2 gunfights on your back, you have 4 Speed and +1 Accuracy. This reflects how a more seasoned gunfighter keeps his cool better when bullets start flying around etc. Things like flinching (the roll to duck for cover if fired upon) are also modified by previous gunfight experience. No amount of shooting practice will substitute the real thing :) Personally, I like the idea this system has for the gunfights. It allows for different kinds of characters and professions, and you can still hold your own in a gunfight. There is no “gunslinger” as a profession.

Spreadsheet: OK, don´t worry about it too much. Same as I give credit when it´s due for many parts of the system, the skill costs and the ability bonuses are hell. I mean, the detail is great but it is not very intuitive and also the combination of basic and advanced rules makes it even more confusing. The spreadsheet was a godsend! The spreadsheet is a great tool for me, but not a necessity for the players I think. If you are keen on having it for reference, I can email it to you if you wish (send me a MP with your email address).

I see, I read about the BP mistake but couldn't figure the numbers out. Anyway, 17BP it is. I'm only spending some of them for now:

- Agriculture (3BP, 3rd)

- Animal Herding (Cattle) (1BP, 4th)

- Current Affairs (3BP, 3rd), you sold me on it :) I might still improve Reading Comp./Penmanship but it certainly is expensive so I'll leave it for another time.

I will upload the sheet when you´ve confirmed the goods from Fort Worth.

There are two players that have not posted for a while, and I could assign you one of the main characters. But in theory they are coming back so I´ll wait a week or so. One has medical issues and the other had a long internship that has now ended.

Options:

1) we can create a new original character from scratch in this scene. It takes a week or so. Then you can participate in a few scenes with the character, and you can then take this character with you to another game in the future (if he survives) where he could have a more important role. One suggestion: A Bounty Hunter... :) It´s easy to write into the story, and he can be one the "good guys" without being a "good guy".

2) I can assign you a character from a story with a prepared sheet and you can participate in a scene or two.

In any case, if any of the two missing players confirms they´ll be MIA, I´ll assign you their character straight away.

I'm not sure, boss. Let's say I want to improve my charisma (now that I work with many people in the Saloon, and I don't want to keep being the silent guy playing cards for himself in the corner). I've got 8 CHAR, so my learning modifier is -2. That means that if I want to improve my 'Diplomacy', it would cost 2 BPs instead of 4? Or it would cost 6?

Bounty Hunter: Trinity W. King.

We can start with the character sheet. Have a look at the Tutorial scene to get an overview of the system. I will guide you through the character generation step by step.

First, the Ability Scores. I will make the rolls for you here to go quicker. 3d6 for Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Looks and Charisma. And 1d100 for Fractional Ability.

During character creation, there are Building Points (you start with 75BP) that you use to buy skills, get Talents or Quirks or Flaws, money and such.

The Abilities (done the rolls): very high Charisma, good Dexterity. And high Strength. Not bad.

Now, you can modify some of the Abilities. The options are:

1) Generate Ability Points: you can sacrifice points from one ability score to increase another (except Looks). Depending on the current value of the Ability, the cost for the trade up is different:

7 or less: 1 for 1
8-10 => 2 for 1
11-13 => 3 for 1
14-16 => 4 for 1
17-20 => 5 for 1
21+ => 10 for 1

This option does not spend BPs which is good as they are important. For instance, you could trade 2 STR points to +1 DEX.

2) Generate Building Points: you can sacrifice Ability scores to get additional BPs for later.

3) Spend Starting Building Points => you can raise the fractional ability. The cost is 1 BP per 5 fractional ability points. You need to reach 100% for the fractional ability to increase the Ability score.

For instance, 93% DEX fraction is begging for you to spend 2 BP, so you get +10% and DEX = 11.

Humm... Not sure I'm following :) I had 17BP, spent 7, so there should be 10 left, shouldn't it? Did you subtract half of them to reduce my BP debt? If so, how many more BP do I still owe? I wasn't going to spend more points at this moment, so if I have enough I can pay them off now and we get rid of the debt for good, what do you think?

Also, I improved Agriculture under 49%, shouldn't that grant me a few extra points?

OK, I think the social skills are a good direction for Mayer considering his occupation, and his natural charisma. Skill costs for Diplomacy spot on, 2 BP. Here are a few other social skills with costs:

Diplomacy: 2BP 1st purchase, 6 BP 2nd purchase
Fast Taling: 2nd purchase 4BP
Idle Gossip: 1st purchase 3 BP
Joke Telling: 1st purchase 3 BP
Oration: directly 2nd purchase, 4 BP
Seduction: 1st purchase 3 BP
Slick Talker: 1st purchase 2BP

Three interesting ones:

Slick Talker: to speak with subtle nuances, tactical pauses, and a smooth lilting vocal tone to lure a person into revealing himself. Or to reveal far more than he ever intended.

Fast Talking: to overwhelm with a torrent of words.

Diplomacy: to negotiate treaties, conduct relations between political entities, nations and/or  tribes, and establish trade between such groups. He is able to deal effectively with people. He knows when to compromise and when to take a hard line in order to get what he wants. A successful check means the person being negotiated with reacts favorably to the character and his offer

I definitely think Diplomacy is a good one for Mayer.
